Oh Oh Ohio Dance
Posted by Steve at 10:23 am on Thursday, July 24, 2008
Here’s a quick heads up about one of this year’s dances: Tuesday night’s dance theme is Oh-Oh-Ohio, and our local committee has taken a little extra twist with this theme. The dance will have a retro tone, with music from decades gone by, and decorations to match. There may also be trivia and/or prizes. So pack your bell bottoms, your aquanet, your tie-dye, your NKOTB tour t-shirt, whatever will take you back in time, and we’ll see you on the dance floor on Read More

By this time next week, early registrants will be on campus, dining in the food court or ordering pizza. I can’t believe it has snuck up on us like this, but we’re almost ready to go!
We have one last meeting with the Shriver Center staff on Wednesday, and a whole mess of last-minute details to attend to, but it’s almost showtime!

I’m on campus, running some errands. The day is warm, humid, a little overcast, and...a little devoid of JCL activity. I can’t wait until the rest of you get here.
I really love this campus. I hope in a few weeks, you will Read More

I saw this note up on NJCL.org a couple weeks ago, and thought it merited a mention. Since this year marks a homecoming back to Miami University and the NJCL's Oxford office, National Committee member David Volk has invited previous JCL members to come visit Convention on Friday, August 1, as part of Homecoming Day/Day in Old Rome festivities.
So if you've ever been a member of JCL and want to get just a small fix of JCL spirit, you're invited to visit Convention on that day!

We’re doing some work behind the scenes. If things start looking wonky, it’s probably because Sextus tripped over something. But we’ve got a handy supply of sticks at the ready, so things should be back to normal in no time.

Well, we’re only about a day away from the deadline for the packet request forms to be mailed to the NJCL offices. I’ve gotten a fair number of questions through this web site about the packet request and the deadline, so I thought I’d do a little FAQ action here and see if I can answer some of the more common Read More

So since it's been a month since my last post and since, as Convention Chair, I am naturally curious as to how well this Convention will be attended, I am throwing a couple of questions out there for anyone to answer in the comments:

Greetings everyone! It’s been a while since I’ve posted, but recently there’s not been much on my end to discuss. Today, though, I’ve been working on a couple of things that I thought people would actually like to read about, things that hopefully you’ll notice at Convention (if everything works, by lady Fortune...).
For one, I’ve been working on getting speakers and other support from all the university Classics departments around Ohio. So far, we’ve gotten a few responses of

I saw the following video posted by Carissa Williams over at the NJCL.org forums Considering our last post was about the cost of Convention, I thought this movie was creative, funny, and timely. Factually incorrect, perhaps (Convention is $400, not $500), but funny.

$400
I noted this in the comments of the ‘Happy New Year’ entry, but since this bit of information is always highly anticipated, I figured it deserved its own post.
So that’s the number that Mrs. Dutra passed on to me yesterday. It should be officially listed at njcl.org soon.
Please don’t let the round number fool you; yes, it is quite a bit of money, BUT it’s only $10 more than last year’s Convention, and $10 is the smallest dollar increase in convention cost since between the

So it’s been a couple of months since our last entry, but don’t fret. We’ve been working behind the scenes to put together some more details about this summer’s Convention and help the JCL office prep the registration materials. In the meantime, Brian and I want to wish all of you a Happy New Year. As always, we can’t wait to see you in July!
In the meantime, if you have any questions about this summer’s Convention, please leave them in the comments and we’ll be happy to respond as best

Before I get into the Fall Planning meeting itself, I want to say something about the site for Graphic Arts. This was probably the hardest activity for which to find a spot, and the the reasons were twofold: 1) It has to be big. You’ve got the main body of projects, then you’ve got scrapbooks, then you’ve got multi-media; and 2) It has to be off-line the whole week, because those projects aren’t going anywhere and they need to be secure. So, you have to make sure there’s a space that

Here we are in lovely Uptown Oxford, Ohio, getting ready for a day of tours, agenda discussions, and other items of planning goodness. As time warrants, we’ll be posting items of interest about our tours.
We actually were in town yesterday with such NJCL luminaries as President Grace Jeong, Secretary Emily Calder, national committee chair Martha Altieri, creative contest chair Amy Elifrits, and the incomparable Geri Dutra, doing an initial campus tour, an extensive walkthrough of the

After some slow development, we’re happy to introduce njcl08.org, the site of the 2008 National Junior Classical League Convention. Think of this site as a complement to the official NJCL web site, njcl.org. Our hope with this site is three-fold:
- to keep you informed about our planning for the 2008 Convention at Miami University
- to get your feedback about what you would like to see from next year’s Convention
- to get you excited about Ohio, Miami, and to pass the time until July
