Convention Cost
Posted by Steve at 02:41 pm on Sunday, January 27, 2008
$400
I noted this in the comments of the ‘Happy New Year’ entry, but since this bit of information is always highly anticipated, I figured it deserved its own post.
So that’s the number that Mrs. Dutra passed on to me yesterday. It should be officially listed at njcl.org soon.
Please don’t let the round number fool you; yes, it is quite a bit of money, BUT it’s only $10 more than last year’s Convention, and $10 is the smallest dollar increase in convention cost since between the

Transportation from the Airport
Posted by Steve at 01:14 pm on Sunday, January 27, 2008
When you fly to convention, how do you get to campus? In the past, the host school has offered a shuttle service and have handled registrations. We’ve talked with Miami about using their Miami Metro buses to provide a general shuttle service to make the 40-mile trip from the Cincinnati airport (CVG) to Oxford. Unfortunately, it looks like we’re going to decide against using them for a couple of different reasons:
1. Convenience. To make the shuttle service affordable, we would have to

Happy New Year!
Posted by Steve at 07:21 pm on Monday, January 7, 2008
So it’s been a couple of months since our last entry, but don’t fret. We’ve been working behind the scenes to put together some more details about this summer’s Convention and help the JCL office prep the registration materials. In the meantime, Brian and I want to wish all of you a Happy New Year. As always, we can’t wait to see you in July!
In the meantime, if you have any questions about this summer’s Convention, please leave them in the comments and we’ll be happy to respond as best

Fall Planning: Nuts and Bolts Part 2
Posted by Brian at 12:13 pm on Friday, October 26, 2007
Before I get into the Fall Planning meeting itself, I want to say something about the site for Graphic Arts. This was probably the hardest activity for which to find a spot, and the the reasons were twofold: 1) It has to be big. You’ve got the main body of projects, then you’ve got scrapbooks, then you’ve got multi-media; and 2) It has to be off-line the whole week, because those projects aren’t going anywhere and they need to be secure. So, you have to make sure there’s a space that

Fall Planning: Nuts and Bolts
Posted by Brian at 12:25 pm on Thursday, October 25, 2007
OK, time for a peek inside the sausage factory. The thing that the local committee does most, from the moment they know when convention is up until Fall Planning, is work on scheduling. We’ve dealt with the schedule three separate times in the last month, with two of those being back-to-back days at Fall Planning. Truthfully, though, there isn’t much else you CAN work on except for the Invitation- so many details are decided at Fall Planning that affect Convention that you really can’t

Fall Planning Wrap-up
Posted by Brian at 11:17 am on Wednesday, October 24, 2007
Whew! Fall Planning meeting is over. It was the first time I’d ever sat in on one of these, and the amount of detail that goes into planning the schedule is amazing. For example, we tried reorganizing the events of the last day, starting with GA and then doing Day in Old Rome (much like we used to). We then ran into a snag with contests and awards- Certamen was too close to the start time of GA, and errors from the awards assembly in the morning would just be getting fixed, meaning

Semi-Live Blogging the Fall Planning Meeting
Posted by Steve at 06:50 am on Friday, October 19, 2007
Here we are in lovely Uptown Oxford, Ohio, getting ready for a day of tours, agenda discussions, and other items of planning goodness. As time warrants, we’ll be posting items of interest about our tours.
We actually were in town yesterday with such NJCL luminaries as President Grace Jeong, Secretary Emily Calder, national committee chair Martha Altieri, creative contest chair Amy Elifrits, and the incomparable Geri Dutra, doing an initial campus tour, an extensive walkthrough of the

Posted by Brian at 12:12 pm on Monday, September 24, 2007
Hey everyone! I noticed we have gotten some new members to the site, so welcome. Anyone can join our little community here- check the links on the right for information how.
Tomorrow Steve and I are going to Miami to meet with Geri Dutra and Pam Vanness, our convention coordinator. We’re going to watch a rough cut of the ‘07 Convention video with her to help her envision what convention will look like- I’ll let y’all know how it turned out. Doubtful there’ll be any major information

Welcome to Miami
Posted by Brian at 07:38 pm on Monday, September 10, 2007
Salvete! I’m Brian Compton, one of the two chairs for the 2008 NJCL Convention at Miami University along with Steve Gentle. I can’t tell you how excited everyone in our state is to be welcoming our fellow JCL’ers this summer, and we can’t wait for July. This is a really special event for Steve and I- not only are we (nearly) lifelong fans of JCL, but Miami has been like a second home for us. Steve graduated in 1993, the year that Convention last visited Oxford (he was also NSCL Vice

Welcome!
Posted by Steve at 01:17 am on Monday, August 20, 2007
After some slow development, we’re happy to introduce njcl08.org, the site of the 2008 National Junior Classical League Convention. Think of this site as a complement to the official NJCL web site, njcl.org. Our hope with this site is three-fold:
- to keep you informed about our planning for the 2008 Convention at Miami University
- to get your feedback about what you would like to see from next year’s Convention
- to get you excited about Ohio, Miami, and to pass the time until July
