Transportation from the Airport

Posted by Steve at 01:14 pm on Sunday, January 27, 2008

When you fly to convention, how do you get to campus? In the past, the host school has offered a shuttle service and have handled registrations. We’ve talked with Miami about using their Miami Metro buses to provide a general shuttle service to make the 40-mile trip from the Cincinnati airport (CVG) to Oxford. Unfortunately, it looks like we’re going to decide against using them for a couple of different reasons:

1. Convenience. To make the shuttle service affordable, we would have to whittle down the available shuttles to 2 or 3 scheduled times on Sunday and Monday; this would have potentially required groups to hang out in the airport for up to two hours while they waited on the next bus. In addition, the times would he rigidly set, so if you were going to be on the last shuttle of the day and your flight was delayed, you would miss the last shuttle and would have to arrange for your own transportation at greatly increased cost and inconvenience.

2. Cost. As mentioned above, on first estimate, the cost appears to be no less expensive than any of the other individual shuttles that typically serve the Miami-Cincinnati route. Further, we were only pricing for the Cincinnati airport , so if you found a much less expensive flight into Dayton (DAY) or Indianapolis (IND)—a very real possibility—we would not have shuttles available for you anyway.

3. Staffing. If we were to provide service via Miami Metro, the JCL office—not Miami University—would have to coordinate all bookings, and between ACL Institute and NJCL Convention, the JCL staff is already stretched thin over the summer. In addition, we would need to have a teacher from the Cincinnati area sitting in the airport to track when people had arrived and coordinate the pickup with the buses. This is one less teacher we would have available to provide support with our setup, move-in and hosting duties.

Make no mistake, we wanted to provide this service, but we think that letting you set up your transportation directly will provide you with an affordable, flexible way to get to Oxford. Currently Mrs. Dutra is checking with services in and around Oxford to get contact information as well as to arrange group rates. As those become available, we’ll be listing them here and, of course, in the white booklet.

I am interested in finding out what transportation will be available to/from the airport. WHat major airport is the closest in proximity to Oxford? Please email me as soon as tramsportation information is availabe. My daughter who is from the IL delegation, will be flying from and returning to Boston, MA after the convention. Transportation information is vital to making her plans for the trip. Thank you.

The closest major airport is the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International airport (airport code: CVG). it is a Delta hub, and it takes less than an hour to get from CVG to Oxford.

Oxford-based Need-A-Ride provides shuttle service to Oxford from CVG. You can call them at 800-891-0064 for a quote. When calling, mention that your daughter will be attending the JCL Convention to get a special JCL rate.

Tyler,

Glad to know the hair will be gracing us from Jersey! wink

From Dayton, you may want to look at the comments here: http://www.njcl08.org/index.php/site/article/gremlins_at_work/ . The shuttle company we listed in the white booklet (Need-A-Ride, listed in comment 2 here) is apparently charging $50 per way from the Dayton airport. If you can find someone else to ride with, you may want to look at the other service noted in the comments.

From the Amtrak stop in Cincinnati (Union Terminal), well, you can contact Need-A-Ride, but I’m not sure how the rate will shake out. Also, IIRC, the train arrives really, really, really, really early—or maybe even really late.

I’d come pick you up, but, well, I’ve got a couple of things to take care of on campus. wink
