I hope you all have returned safely home by now, and that your trips to, from, and at Convention were enjoyable and memorable.

I’m still trying to catch up on my sleep, and relishing the fact that my cell doesn’t ring every 4 minutes any more.

Like most of you, I think that Convention goes too fast, and that we don’t get to sample everything. I regret we didn’t get to see the Sundown Under the Sundial ice cream social, and I regret that I didn’t get to spend much of any time in Upham viewing certamen or creative events, even after I’d spent most of my last month trying to find appropriate rooms for those events. And I certainly regret not being able to hear how the dive-in movie went.

Since I couldn’t get to all those events and more, I’d be interested in your feedback for this year’s Convention. It won’t change this year’s Convention, but it will at least give some amount of feedback for California as they plan for Davis. So let’s hear it:
- What did you think went well at Convention?
- What do you think was not so great?
- What could we have done better?
- And for my benefit, what was your favorite memory of your time in Oxford?

Here’s a quick heads up about one of this year’s dances: Tuesday night’s dance theme is Oh-Oh-Ohio, and our local committee has taken a little extra twist with this theme. The dance will have a retro tone, with music from decades gone by, and decorations to match. There may also be trivia and/or prizes. So pack your bell bottoms, your aquanet, your tie-dye, your NKOTB tour t-shirt, whatever will take you back in time, and we’ll see you on the dance floor on Tuesday!

I saw this note up on NJCL.org a couple weeks ago, and thought it merited a mention. Since this year marks a homecoming back to Miami University and the NJCL's Oxford office, National Committee member David Volk has invited previous JCL members to come visit Convention on Friday, August 1, as part of Homecoming Day/Day in Old Rome festivities.

So if you've ever been a member of JCL and want to get just a small fix of JCL spirit, you're invited to visit Convention on that day!

According to the notice on NJCL.org:

Homecoming day will begin with a luncheon on Friday afternoon at the university, and the cost for this luncheon will be $15. After the luncheon alumni are invited to attend the general assembly, Roman Banquet, and evening activities.

In addition, if you want to stay overnight either before or after Convention, NJCL has arranged for group of rooms to be held at the Elms Hotel in Uptown Oxford until July 1.

Visit njcl.org for full details.

In a quick conversation with the JCL office today, I found out that we have a significant number of registration packets still out in circulation, even though the deadline for returingin packets is now past.

You need to return your packets. Quickly.

Yes, you have paid for the packet, but the office cannot assign you a room or register you for any activities until you have returned your packet. That means that unless you return your packet, you cannot attend Convention.

Please return your registration packets as quickly as possible via U.S. Mail at the address printed on the big envelope that came with your packet. Please note that the office cannot accept registration packets via fax.

Hi everyone! Just a couple other things about packets to add onto what Steve’s said.

1) Steve and I do not have anything to do with the receiving and answering of packet request forms. Therefore, we have no way of knowing if an individual request was or was not received. If you are concerned that you have not received a packet, please contact the office via email (administrator@aclclassics.org) or by phone (513-529-7741).

2) Please be patient with the office staff and the sending of packets. Each request is processed as efficiently as possible. However, this is not the only activity going on at this time (National Latin Honor Society, JCL chapter registrations, the American Classical League’s Institute, and a slew of other things are going on simultaneously). The office has a highly dedicated, yet small, staff, so response may not be immediate. If your postmark was May 1st, you should get a packet no later than this coming week (Week of May 12). If you have not, then you should be concerned.

3) Please, PLEASE, when you get your packet, fill it out COMPLETELY. Check every blank and see who needs to fill in what. Even if your sponsor is not going, he or she is responsible for filling in and verifying certain details (grade level, level of Latin, giving permission to go). Likewise, there are a number of things that parents need to complete (signing for permission, completion of medical info form). Lastly, find out if your delegation/state/people with whom you are traveling are staying on Sunday night-you will need to complete the last form and send in an extra $30 with your packet. If you forget to do anything before sending it in, you will get it back-at your expense-and then have to send it back-at your expense. You will also make Mary Smith angry - you wouldn’t like her when she’s angry. Oh, and don’t lose the White Booklet.

4) Other Questions We Can’t Answer:
- Who would win in a roll-call showdown: the Wisconsin Spirit Cow or the Maine Lobster?
- What is the supersecret ending to the next Indiana Jones movie?
- Fu vs. Chuck Norris?
- How many Bothans died to bring the Rebellion the plans to the second Death Star?

Email any other convention related questions to steve@njcl08.org and brian@njcl08.org. So long for now!

Well, we’re only about a day away from the deadline for the packet request forms to be mailed to the NJCL offices. I’ve gotten a fair number of questions through this web site about the packet request and the deadline, so I thought I’d do a little FAQ action here and see if I can answer some of the more common questions.

Q Is my money due with my packet request or when I return my completed packet?
A As has been the case for the past four years, full payment for the Convention is due when you request the packet.

Q Can I send my packet request via fax?
A Yes. The packet request form lists the NJCL office fax number (513-529-7742). You may fax the fully completed form there, and you may even pay for the registration via credit card by completing that part of the form.

Q Can I submit a packet request over the phone or by email?
A No. Packet requests will only be accepted through U.S. Mail or by fax (see above).

Q Does my packet have to be mailed or received by May 1?
A The May 1 deadline is a postmark deadline. Your packet request should be postmarked May 1, and it should be received by the office by May 9.

Q My teacher isn’t going and I need a chaperone. Does this mean I can’t go to Convention?
A Not necessarily. If your teacher says that you may go, and you can find another chaperone who is willing to take you under her or his wing, we will see you in Oxford. Just remember: males must have a male chaperone, females must have a female chaperone.

Q My teacher is a female, but I am a male. Does this mean I can’t go?
A Not at all. Chances are your teacher knows another teacher or chaperone in your state that will be willing to chaperone you. If not, you can check with neighboring states to see if they have any extra chaperones who might be willing to help you out.

Q I have a situation that is slightly different than anything outlined here. What should I do?
A Email administrator@njcl.org or call 513-529-7741

Q Will Fu be at this Convention?
A Unlike the 2006 Convention at Indiana University, we have every reason to believe that Fu will be spending the whole week at Miami this year.

Q Is it true that Miami was a University before Florida was a state?
A Yes.

Q Are you done answering packet request questions?
A Isn’t it obvious? If you have more questions, ask them in the comments, and we’ll see if we can answer them.

So since it's been a month since my last post and since, as Convention Chair, I am naturally curious as to how well this Convention will be attended, I am throwing a couple of questions out there for anyone to answer in the comments:

Are you coming to Convention this year?

Have you ordered your Convention Packet yet?

If you are not sure that you will be able to make it, what is the biggest issue standing in your way?

How much Fu is too much Fu?

As you all know, the OJCL, my co-chair Brian Compton and I are really excited to welcome all of you to Oxford this summer. We think that Miami is a fantastic campus and the conference folks are really working hard to make this a special week for NJCL. We hope that you are also excited about attending!

See you in the comments -- and then at Miami!

Good news! The packet request form is available for download at njcl.org. You can now request packets between March 1 and May 1. As a reminder, the full Convention fee of $400 is required when submitting your packet request form.

Also, if you would like all the gory details about what Convention entails, the White Booklet that is typically enclosed in the packet is also available for download from njcl.org.

Finally, we also have a downloadable flyer that highlights a lot of the events available during Convention. This is the flyer that teachers will get in their monthly mailings from NJCL.

Greetings everyone! It’s been a while since I’ve posted, but recently there’s not been much on my end to discuss. Today, though, I’ve been working on a couple of things that I thought people would actually like to read about, things that hopefully you’ll notice at Convention (if everything works, by lady Fortune...).

For one, I’ve been working on getting speakers and other support from all the university Classics departments around Ohio. So far, we’ve gotten a few responses of schools that would like to send speakers of some other kind of material for us to distribute at Convention. We have a couple of great professors from Miami already committed to present, but we’ve got a few from other colleges as well. This may not seem like much, but for Steve and I, it’s a big part of our plans, something that we’ve spent quite some time discussing. For one thing, this will make it a truly Ohio convention, with participation from all over the state. Since only one other university in Ohio has hosted a Convention besides Miami (Ohio University, and that was waaay back in 1970), it’s easy to forget that we have a lot of wonderful schools all over the state, urban and rural, large and small. And that’s the other thing- this is a chance for us to sell JCL’ers on Ohio. Many of you are contemplating college, and the rest of you aren’t far away from it. As for the SCL’ers out there, if you’re looking for schools to do graduate or doctoral work, Ohio schools offer great programs in Classics and other fields, many of them highly rated. The University of Cincinnati, for example, has been a part of archaeological research in Troy and Greece for many, many years, and still does active work there today, sometimes with student assistants. If you’re not going on to study Classics, however, UC also offers top programs in Engineering and various fields of Design and Art, it has a widely recognized program for musical performance through its College Conservatory of Music, and it has excellent schools of Medicine and Law (University Hospital is one of the best research hospitals in the nation, especially in cardiovascular studies). Likewise, Miami has a great Classics department but is equally gifted in its School of Business and its Communications department. We’re also home to lesser known gems such as Case Western Reserve (another great Engineering school), Wright State, and the universities of Akron, Toledo, and Dayton, as well as major schools for academics and athletics such as Ohio University and its Journalism school (Matt Lauer of the Today Show is an alum), TheOhio State University (we’re contractually obligated to add the emphasized “the” to the name, and to say it’s pronounced “thee") with a great program in Veterinary Medicine, and Xavier University (the “X” is pronounced like a “Z,” despite how badly national sports broadcasters butcher it). And, of course, many of them have great Classics programs, too. So, just like there’s more than corn in Indiana, there’s more than Cornfield U. in Ohio .

The other thing that I can talk about is something I’ve been really excited about for a long time, but I’ve been reluctant to talk about it for fear it wouldn’t happen. Now, barring any unforeseen issues, it looks like it’s going to happen. I’m a huge fan of comic books, as I’m sure many of you out there are. I’m also a Classicist, and while I like Latin, my first love in the field was mythology. So, I’ve been really into an ongoing series from Image Comics called Age of Bronze by Eric Shanower. The goal of the series is to tell the entire story of the Trojan War as a combination of myth and history, much in the style of Troy but with vastly more adherence to the source material. And I do mean “vastly more;” Mr. Shanower has done extensive research on both the archaeological and literary tradition of Troy, and he incorporates all of this into his comic. His Helen and other female characters are based on images of women found at Troy, while his Agamemnon is based in part on the famous mask of Agamemnon. His depictions of clothing, arms and armor, ships, and buildings all come from what has been learned about Mycenaean and Trojan culture via digs at various sites. As for dialog, an extensive amount of the language of his characters comes from literary sources, both classical and post-classical. Therefore, the things they say and do can be authenticated against one source or another. When its done, it will be one of the most extensive literary and graphic projects dealing with the Trojan War, and all of it (art and writing) being done by one person. So far, his story takes us through the last peaceful embassy to the Trojans before the war begins, so he has a way to go.

Now, why have I told you all of this? Because, as of now, Mr. Shanower is going to be a special guest speaker at the 2008 NJCL Convention! Fresh off an appearance at the San Diego Comic-Con, Mr. Shanower will be doing two sessions with us; one for sure will be on his own, and I hope the other one will be in conjunction with the Institute for Mediterranean Studies, an organization in Cincinnati with which he has long-standing connections. He may also be selling some of his books through the Teachers’ Book Display. I’ve heard him speak before, and he is a very interesting speaker; it’s fascinating to see and hear how much and what kind of work he’s put into creating this magnum opus, and any aspiring artists will have a chance to talk directly with someone working in the field.

That’s all for now. Talk at you later!

I saw the following video posted by Carissa Williams over at the NJCL.org forums Considering our last post was about the cost of Convention, I thought this movie was creative, funny, and timely. Factually incorrect, perhaps (Convention is $400, not $500), but funny.
