I hope you all have returned safely home by now, and that your trips to, from, and at Convention were enjoyable and memorable.

I’m still trying to catch up on my sleep, and relishing the fact that my cell doesn’t ring every 4 minutes any more.

Like most of you, I think that Convention goes too fast, and that we don’t get to sample everything. I regret we didn’t get to see the Sundown Under the Sundial ice cream social, and I regret that I didn’t get to spend much of any time in Upham viewing certamen or creative events, even after I’d spent most of my last month trying to find appropriate rooms for those events. And I certainly regret not being able to hear how the dive-in movie went.

Since I couldn’t get to all those events and more, I’d be interested in your feedback for this year’s Convention. It won’t change this year’s Convention, but it will at least give some amount of feedback for California as they plan for Davis. So let’s hear it:

- What did you think went well at Convention?

- What do you think was not so great?

- What could we have done better?

- And for my benefit, what was your favorite memory of your time in Oxford?

Oh Oh Ohio Dance

Here’s a quick heads up about one of this year’s dances: Tuesday night’s dance theme is Oh-Oh-Ohio, and our local committee has taken a little extra twist with this theme. The dance will have a retro tone, with music from decades gone by, and decorations to match. There may also be trivia and/or prizes. So pack your bell bottoms, your aquanet, your tie-dye, your NKOTB tour t-shirt, whatever will take you back in time, and we’ll see you on the dance floor on Tuesday!

By this time next week, early registrants will be on campus, dining in the food court or ordering pizza. I can’t believe it has snuck up on us like this, but we’re almost ready to go!

We have one last meeting with the Shriver Center staff on Wednesday, and a whole mess of last-minute details to attend to, but it’s almost showtime!

For those of you who want to plan your week, here’s a little you can check out our online schedule here: http://www.njcl08.org/index.php/schedule/index/ This is 99% accurate, with only some missing assembly agenda items here and there that were fixed in the actual printed program.

We’ll see you in a week!

I’m on campus, running some errands. The day is warm, humid, a little overcast, and...a little devoid of JCL activity. I can’t wait until the rest of you get here.

I really love this campus. I hope in a few weeks, you will too.

NJCL Homecoming!

I saw this note up on NJCL.org a couple weeks ago, and thought it merited a mention. Since this year marks a homecoming back to Miami University and the NJCL's Oxford office, National Committee member David Volk has invited previous JCL members to come visit Convention on Friday, August 1, as part of Homecoming Day/Day in Old Rome festivities.

So if you've ever been a member of JCL and want to get just a small fix of JCL spirit, you're invited to visit Convention on that day!

According to the notice on NJCL.org:

Homecoming day will begin with a luncheon on Friday afternoon at the university, and the cost for this luncheon will be $15. After the luncheon alumni are invited to attend the general assembly, Roman Banquet, and evening activities.

In addition, if you want to stay overnight either before or after Convention, NJCL has arranged for group of rooms to be held at the Elms Hotel in Uptown Oxford until July 1.

Visit njcl.org for full details.

In a quick conversation with the JCL office today, I found out that we have a significant number of registration packets still out in circulation, even though the deadline for returingin packets is now past.

You need to return your packets. Quickly.

Yes, you have paid for the packet, but the office cannot assign you a room or register you for any activities until you have returned your packet. That means that unless you return your packet, you cannot attend Convention.

Please return your registration packets as quickly as possible via U.S. Mail at the address printed on the big envelope that came with your packet. Please note that the office cannot accept registration packets via fax.

The address for the NJCL Office is:

National Junior Classical League

422 Wells Mill Drive

We’re getting ready to order name tag materials and we wanted to know what people think about the “feed bag” style name tag holder we’ve been using over the last few years. Some people like them, some people don’t. If you’re not sure what I’m talking about, it’s the pouch that goes around your neck and usually has a zipped compartment in the back. So, what do you all think? Leave a message below in the comments and make your mark on convention this year. See ya!

We’re doing some work behind the scenes. If things start looking wonky, it’s probably because Sextus tripped over something. But we’ve got a handy supply of sticks at the ready, so things should be back to normal in no time.

A Few More Details on Packets

Hi everyone! Just a couple other things about packets to add onto what Steve’s said.

1) Steve and I do not have anything to do with the receiving and answering of packet request forms. Therefore, we have no way of knowing if an individual request was or was not received. If you are concerned that you have not received a packet, please contact the office via email (administrator@aclclassics.org) or by phone (513-529-7741).

2) Please be patient with the office staff and the sending of packets. Each request is processed as efficiently as possible. However, this is not the only activity going on at this time (National Latin Honor Society, JCL chapter registrations, the American Classical League’s Institute, and a slew of other things are going on simultaneously). The office has a highly dedicated, yet small, staff, so response may not be immediate. If your postmark was May 1st, you should get a packet no later than this coming week (Week of May 12). If you have not, then you should be concerned.

3) Please, PLEASE, when you get your packet, fill it out COMPLETELY. Check every blank and see who needs to fill in what. Even if your sponsor is not going, he or she is responsible for filling in and verifying certain details (grade level, level of Latin, giving permission to go). Likewise, there are a number of things that parents need to complete (signing for permission, completion of medical info form). Lastly, find out if your delegation/state/people with whom you are traveling are staying on Sunday night-you will need to complete the last form and send in an extra $30 with your packet. If you forget to do anything before sending it in, you will get it back-at your expense-and then have to send it back-at your expense. You will also make Mary Smith angry - you wouldn’t like her when she’s angry. Oh, and don’t lose the White Booklet.

4) Other Questions We Can’t Answer:

- Who would win in a roll-call showdown: the Wisconsin Spirit Cow or the Maine Lobster?

- What is the supersecret ending to the next Indiana Jones movie?

- Fu vs. Chuck Norris?

- How many Bothans died to bring the Rebellion the plans to the second Death Star?

Email any other convention related questions to steve@njcl08.org and brian@njcl08.org. So long for now!
